International Day of Yoga – June 21

On December 11, 2014 the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 to be International Day of Yoga, about three months after India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the idea.

The General Assembly recognized that Yoga “provides a holistic approach to health and well-being”, and the more information that is disseminated about this practice, the more beneficial it can be for the populations of the world.

Narendra Modi addressed the assembly, “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day.”

Geeta Iyengar, daughter of BKS Iyengar, has suggested a sequence of poses to practice as a way to commemorate this special day.

While Harmony Yoga of Ann Arbor will not be offering a special class or gathering to commemorate the International Day of Yoga*, I will be teaching all or parts of Geeta’s suggested sequence during the week leading up to June 21.

I’ll post the sequence in a later post, but you can also read the flyer with the sequence in the link above.

(* June 21 is also special in other ways — it is the Summer Solstice; this year it is also Father’s Day; and most importantly for my husband and me, it’s our 35th wedding anniversary.  We’ll be doing our own celebrations that day!)
